MegaGram: A Word Puzzle Where Every Letter Matters

Some word games give you clues. Some give you letters. MegaGram gives you both — but makes you figure out how they fit together.

MegaGram is a daily word puzzle built around one main answer and a collection of related words. The words you see aren’t random. They have a connection to the answer you’re trying to uncover, and, more importantly, they contain the letters you need to get there.

That makes MegaGram part anagram, part association game, and part process of elimination.

How MegaGram Works

Each puzzle has a single answer built around a particular subject, person, place, object, movie, idea or other recognizable topic. You’re given related words that provide both clues to the answer and the letters necessary to solve it.

For example, a puzzle might point toward a famous movie through actors, characters, locations or other associated words. Another might revolve around a country, an invention, a historical figure or something sitting in your kitchen.

The challenge is figuring out what all those pieces are trying to tell you.

Sometimes you’ll recognize the connection immediately. Other times, one particular letter or association will be what finally makes everything click.

It’s Not Just an Anagram

A traditional anagram gives you a pile of letters and asks you to rearrange them. MegaGram adds another layer because the words themselves matter.

That means there are two ways into a puzzle.

You can concentrate on the letters and look for possible answers, or you can ignore the letter mechanics for a moment and ask what the words have in common. Usually, the best approach is somewhere in between.

That also creates some useful misdirection. A related word might seem like an obvious clue when its most important contribution is actually one of its letters.

A Little Strategy Helps

When a MegaGram has you stuck, look at the strangest word in the group. Common associations can lead in dozens of directions, but an unusual word often dramatically narrows the possibilities.

Then look at your letters.

If you think you know the answer but can’t account for a necessary letter, you may be heading down the wrong path. MegaGram rewards guesses that work both conceptually and mechanically.

And because the puzzles can cover just about anything, there’s no single type of knowledge that guarantees an easy solve. Movies, science, history, geography, food, technology and pop culture can all show up.

That’s really the point.

MegaGram gives you a handful of seemingly simple words and asks you to find the bigger thing hiding inside them.
